The Elkab Desert Survey Project (EDSP), co-directed by egyptologist John C. Darnell, is a joint Yale and Brussels Royal Museums of Art and History expedition to explore the ancient Egyptian city of Elkab. EDSP uncovered previously unknown rock inscriptions, including the earliest monumental hieroglyphs dating back around 5,200 years.

In order to preserve the rock art and its historical significance, EDSP explored virtual and digital heritage preservation methods. Using photogrammetry, the entire rock monument was scanned and turned into a 3D model for further investigation. We transformed the active excavation site into a VR experience called Elkab Rock Art VR to allow students, researchers, and archaeologists to explore the rock graffiti inscriptions themselves and as we uncovered more information.
